National Learning Infrastructure Initiative:

"Learning objects are digital resources, modular in nature, that are used to support learning. They include, but are not limited to, simulations, electronic calculators, animations, tutorials, text entries, Web sites, bibliographies, audio and video clips, quizzes, photographs, illustrations, diagrams, graphs, maps, charts, and assessments. They vary in size, scope, and level of granularity ranging from a small chunk of instruction to a series of resources combined to provide a more complex learning experience. "

NLII:

"Learning objects are an emerging NLII theme because their use has the potential 'to provide learning customized for each specific learner at a specific time, taking into account, their learning styles, experience, knowledge and learning goals' (Schatz, 2000). In addition, learning objects may 'offer great value in terms of saving time and money in course development, increasing the reusability of content, enhancing students' learning environment, sharing knowledge within and across disciplines, and engaging faculty in a dynamic community of practice' (Metros, 2001). "

IEEE Approves Standard for Learning Content Communication:

"The standard, IEEE 1484.11.2(TM), 'Standard for Learning Technology, ECMAScript Application Programming Interface for Content to Runtime Services Communication,' provides an ECMAScript (more commonly known as JavaScript) application programming interface (API) that enables digital learning content to obtain a learner's name, preferences and other information from a learning platform and enables a platform to receive relevant information, such as test scores and time spent on task, from the content. The API is part of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) and was first developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC)."

Knowledge Director:

"learningDIRECTOR is a unique, off-the-shelf, web-based content development tool that allows you to create rich media content for a high user experience at the click of a mouse.

learningDIRECTOR automatically generates flash-based files and allows you to produce highly interactive and visually engaging content, without having to spend time learning specialist programming knowledge such as HTML or Flash."

Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN):

"The Generic Centre e-learning guides are the first fully comprehensive guides on e-learning aimed at specific audiences within UK higher education. They address issues that are key to senior managers, teachers, support staff, learning technologists, heads of department and students, but the same message emerges from all: e-learning is learning, providing us with useful tools not only to deliver an enhanced learning and teaching experience, but also to push the boundaries of learning and teaching through creative use of technology. Visual Communication (TM 920):What Is Visual Communication?: "What Is Visual Communication?
Visual communication explores the use of graphical components in achieving communication goals. Visual communication has both critical and practical parts. The critical part is known as visual rhetoric, which explores the way that designers use visual elements to influence audiences.
The practical part of visual communication has three areas of focus:
Using a pictures, icons, and symbols to express ideas
Applying principles of graphic design and usability to prepare screens and pages so readers can quickly find information of interest, and comprehend the most information from them
Producing online and printed content so that it matches the design plans.
Visual communication becomes increasingly important as the computers, television, and film become the primary media of communication. Each of these is primarily a visual medium, in which messages are communicated through pictures. Words support the communication of those images.
The growing recognition of the visual component in communication, first explored by advertising but now used in all branches of communication, has led to a shift in professional corporate communication from only writing to information design, which explores how content selection, writing and visual communication integrate into a coherent whole."

Document Design: "Document Design is a platform for researchers and practitioners in organizational communication. The focus is on the internal and external communication of medium sized to multinational corporations, governmental bodies, non-profit organisations, as well as media, health care, educational and legal institutions, etc."

IAwiki: Shape Of Information:

"The concept of shape assumes that an information space of any size has both spatial and semantic characteristics. That is, as well as identifying placement and layout, users directly recognize and respond to content and meaning. Routinely in our lab, users describe what they remember from an interaction in digital space or draw their interpretation of the information space's form and layout. These data clearly point to the intercoupling of spatial and semantic components of memory. "

BogieLand Nov. 2003 - The Document Triangle:

"Every paper and digital document shares three basic dimensions: structure, information and presentation. Although these dimensions are always interwoven, some people in the digital world mostly focus on document structures (e.g. information architects), some on the information they contain (e.g. marketers and writers/editors) while others specialize in the (interactive) presentation aspects (e.g. visual designers and Flash developers). The mutual dependence and interaction of these dimensions is the next level of design and does not regularly get the proper attention. In order to better understand the relationship between these dimensions, let us look at each of them seperately, and how they inter-relate."

Promoting Faculty Adoption of Technology at Wake Forest University: "CELI attempted to promote innovative instruction in three ways: by sponsoring field trips on which WFU faculty members visited other campuses to observe technology use; by inviting guest speakers to WFU to discuss what their institutions were doing with technology; and by awarding release-time grants to faculty members who wished to pursue the use of technology in their teaching."

Promoting Faculty Adoption of Technology at Wake Forest University: "The main focus of the CELI initiative was the release-time grants, which allowed WFU faculty members to reduce their teaching responsibilities by one course for one semester in order to explore and design computer-enhanced learning materials. Grant recipients were required to participate in a series of luncheon meetings to discuss the progress of their projects. At the end of the semester, they also were required to make presentations at a technology fair that provided a public forum for the projects."

CELI Program: "CELI is a faculty-based initiative charged with developing effective uses of computers in instruction. "

Promoting Faculty Adoption of Technology at Wake Forest University: "WFU has tried and continues to use different approaches to promote faculty adoption of technology. There is no magic bullet that is 100% effective, but each approach has had some success because it met a faculty need—the need for a readily available technical advisor, for money and release time to complete special projects, or for a partner committed to exploring and implementing technology tools in the classroom. Regardless of what program or initiative is in place, it is important to remember that when faculty members see their colleagues using technology, they become more open to trying new things. It is our hope that the Wake Forest experience will inspire others to seek the right combination of funding and institution-specific programming to maximize faculty willingness to use technology."

LTI Magazine - What Keeps Universities from Embracing e-Learning?: "Much of the focus in e-learning today--from analysts, industry observers, consultants, and technologists--is on e-learning in the corporate world. But the biggest impact and opportunity for e-learning may ultimately be in education. Most governments want to raise the skills and education level of its population, but to date e-learning has had little impact in this area."

LTI Magazine - E-Learning Solutions: "HunterStone, an e-learning and IT tools provider for Microsoft environments, introduced THESIS 2.0, an e-learning application that creates and deploys SCORM-conforming learning content. THESIS 2.0's user interface integrates into Microsoft Office for Word and PowerPoint and manages Microsoft Producer for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 data. THESIS helps corporate, education, and government agencies create e-learning objects that users can access and reuse across any SCORM-conformant learning management system. "

New Horizons for Learning: Teaching and Learning Strategies: "When students doodle on their papers or draw while listening, it seems they aren't paying attention. However, for many learners, creating images can become a powerful tool for recording ideas and making meaning of what they hear in class. Rather than thwarting this impulse, we can build upon it. Systems for using color, images, drawings, cartoons and symbols as well as words and phrases for recording ideas is now used by many educators as well as business and community leaders. I will use the term mindscape here to refer to these visual maps. The same system works well for communicating ideas to others. The process encourages students to be aware of the meaning of what they are recording as well as the relationships among ideas."
