Technology - Wiki
Swiki.net is based on the original WikiWikiWeb concept by Ward Cunningham. This hosted implementation is based on the Swiki implementation of WikiWikiWeb.
Swiki.net is a hosted website for groups of people with a common interest. Anyone who has access to your web site may add content directly through a web browser. This means that a user may edit any web page on the web site or even add or delete web pages. Because you can do this directly through your web browser, you do not need to have any computer or internet programming knowledge or any special software.
Simply click on the "Edit" icon on any page and begin typing your changes as if the page were in a word processor on your computer! You can then create new pages, upload documents, and add text, images and links. This extremely powerful feature allows true collaboration among groups of people as they share knowledge and keep track of resources.
Learning Technology - RIPPLES and MANIC
The Research in Presentation Production for Learning Electronically (RIPPLES) project is investigating how to most effectively use the World Wide Web and CD/DVD-ROM to deliver lectures and course materials outside of the classroom. Our focus is on asynchronous learning environments in which students proceed at their own pace and are not assumed to be accessing the same material at the same time. Students can access lectures as digital audio or video, synchronized with slides, overheads or other materials.
RIPPLES delivers lectures using several related technologies, employing PERL or PHP and MySQL on the server side, a separate Real server for the digital media, a front end interface written in HTML and JavaScript, and audio/video browser plugins in standard browsers on the client side. For CD-ROM delivery RIPPLES uses a custom browser packaged with the materials on disc. RIPPLES will migrate to DVD-ROM delivery as the technology becomes more widely adopted.
We currently have several courses available on-line, all of which can be accessed freely! They range from full-credit graduate level courses in Computer Networks (over 25 hours of audio and slides) and Operating Systems to short courses on Socket programming and Art History (5-6 hours).
