Search Engine
Teoma Search Technology
Teoma means "expert" in Gaelic. And it is our expert ability to analyze and understand the Web as it occurs naturally (in subject-specific communities) that makes Teoma unique, differentiating it from the myriad search technologies crowding the marketplace today.
When an inspired group of computer scientists from Rutgers University founded Teoma in April 2000, they set out to reinvent the way searching the Internet was done. They succeeded, building a search engine that looks at the Web in terms of subject-specific communities. In April 2001, Teoma.com launched, forever changing the way the Web was searched.
Ask Jeeves, Inc. acquired Teoma in September 2001, and by 2002, Teoma's unduplicated reach had grown 175 percent, making it the third-most widely used search technology in the United States, with a reach of over 25% of the Web (according to Nielsen//NetRatings). The rest of the world soon caught on: Teoma now syndicates its search technology to some of the Internet's most popular Web properties, including Ask Jeeves (Ask.com), Excite, InfoSpace and HotBot.
In early 2003, Teoma launched an advanced version of its technology—Teoma 2.0—with improved relevance, new search tools and advanced functionalities. These enhancements are explained in the section entitled Search With Authority: The Teoma Difference.
